The Dingle Wildlife and Seal Sanctuary, who sponsor the Irish Seal Sanctuary Satalite facility in Dingle, will take in this season's rescued common pups Nationwide for rehabilitation!
The Irish Seal Sanctuary regrets to inform all our members, supporters, sponsors and friends that the Courtown Harbour operation will not continue. We are now homeless but we are intensively looking into all possible solutions to change this situation in the future.
Dingle Wildlife and Seal Sanctuary have kindly agreed to take in the harbour seals this summer and ISS volunteers will care for their rehabilitation. Plans remain outstanding for the grey seal season which will start in September.
We will make every effort to continue to assist animals in distress.
We apologise to you all for not keeping you fully informed of events as they unfolded, however we had hoped that with a quiet approach and negotiations we might be able to come to a reasonable arrangement with Gorey Courtown Forest Park, an arrangement that would be mutually beneficial. Unfortunately this was not to be and the Irish Seal Sanctuary was locked out of the facility in May and even ongoing intensive negotiations didn’t bring satisfactory results which would allow us to plan long-term and build sustainable conservation centre in Courtown Harbour facility.
We would like to thank the people of Gorey and Courtown Harbour who brought us close to their hearts and treated both volunteers and staff with friendship, respect and warmth. Your support and warmth made the long cold winter days (and nights!) easier to bear. We are very sad having to leave the area, a lot of hard work by all volunteers and staff was invested in building up the centre. Not to mention the many items that were supplied either free or at minimum cost to develop the site.
Luckily we were able to redirect 80 European students to Dingle Wildlife and Seal Sanctuary in Kerry as we could not accomodate them at the ISS in Courtown a film crew will be here later in the year to follow their progress. Next month a German film crew will film Exploris in Portaferry instead of the ISS at Courtown Harbour. Unfortunately these opportunities of positive publicity have been lost to Courtown Harbour.
We will however, continue to fight and struggle to find a home for disenfranchised marine wildlife and as over past quarter of a century will rely on the great support of volunteers and our supporters who made all this possible in the past.
